RESTORAN ONG KEE CHICKEN RICE, IPOH

I have not been eating Ipoh Chicken Rice for more than 10 years. Reason is they only sell steamed chicken with sight of blood...yucks!  But, my recent visit to Restoran Ong Kee has totally changed my perception and tastebuds on this staple.

Getting to the eatery is easy but looking for a space to park your car is terrible especially on weekends or public holiday. This area is a hit among tourist who'll come here just for the famous chicken rice, soya bean milk, salted chicken/duck and other local delicacies.

We arrived there at almost 2pm and the restaurant was flocked with patrons enjoying their lunch. We got our table quite fast and settled down with their only best seller.

a plate of steamed chicken
when this dish arrive, I was happy to see the meat was totally cooked up to my liking.
meat was firm and smooth with skin melts in the mouth infused by the aromatic sesame + garlic oil! would be better if eat it with chili sauce instead of cut bird chilies.

+

 a portion of blanched beansprout
you only can find  plumpy and juicy beansprout in Ipoh. garnished with cut red chilies and spring onions with a dash of flavourful soya sauce.

 +

a serving of braised chicken feet with black mushroom
mom asked for this order filled with lots of soft and tender simmered chicken feet and cut mushroom

+

a bowl of plain soup koay teow
slurppy noodles

+

2 plate of white plain rice
...no oily chicken rice is serve here...

This wonderful lunch cost us RM33 only! And I am looking forward for more Ipoh chicken rice...

FUNNY MOUNTAIN, SOYA BEAN MILK & SOFT BEANCURD

Usually, a large crowd or long queue of people will trigger me to unfold my curiosity. The other day,   I joined in a beeline of young and old people in front of Funny Mountain to try the soya bean juice and tau fu fah/sweet soft beancurd.

While waiting for my turn,  I saw on the pillar two plastic framed newspaper cutting .. the owner and celebrity with the delectable dessert.  Guess, I have make the right choice following the crazy crowd!

When it is your turn,  make sure you decide fast whether to have your drink/dessert  there on the spot or take away cos' the owner seems inpatience and so are the rest of people queueing behind you.

Texture was soft and smooth.  I  poured fresh soya bean milk and mixed it....good bonding indeed!

Soya bean milk (glass) = RM0.90/ Take away =RM1.90 per bottle
Soya beancurd (bowl) = RM0.90

EARLY DIM SUM IN RESTORAN FOH SAN,IPOH

When we checked into Hotel Excelsior Ipoh, the receptionist informed us about  Restoran Foh San which is famous for dim sum and  if we are game for it, we must arrive there at 6am to avoid any queue.
So next the morning, we woke up at 530am and walked to the restaurant which is situated just right behind the hotel .  Upon arriving at the restaurant entrance, we were told the business hour starts at 630 am.   Even though the sky is still dark, we saw few elderly couples chatting away and many elderly ladies clocked in for work.

At 630 am sharp, the restaurant open its door to the  customers and within 10 minutes, most of the tables was occupied.

Ordering food is quite simple. Every 5-10 minutes, a female server with a push trolley will  stop at your table and you can choose your choice of dim sum.  We selected seven types of dim sum and digested with a pot of chinese hot tea at RM31.80 only.
A MUST...a pot of  chinese hot tea
Fried Prawn Roll
the beancurd skin was crispy with fresh shrimp unfold inside
Prawn Dumpling
my all time favourite...sweet and juicy prawns enveloped inside translucent skin
Parsley Dumpling
tucked inside the 'green' skin are succulent combo of  minced prawns + pork meat
Steamed Fish Ball
Bouncy and flavorful

Steamed Chicken Glutinous Rice
very addictive...soft  glutinous rice  steamed with aromatic char siew, chicken meat and black mushroom

Fried Prawn Dumpling
moist inner layer with fresh shrimps
Nam Yue/Fermented Red Beancurd Pork Bun
Star of the day....stuffed with fragrant and tender  pork belly meat which melts in the mouth

Oh ya, we even take away a set of nam yue pau and prawn dumpling at RM8.70 for my mom who is still sleeping soundly inside the hotel room.....

Well, this was a good dim sum and worth our effort to wake up so early in the morning when most of the people are still cuddling in bed. Eventhough, the hotel serves free complimentary buffet breakfast but it did not justify our tastebuds.
