CNY & VALENTINE'S DINNER IN RESTORAN HOKKAIDO

Let's put aside my US story for awhile since CNY mood is still in the air. A day after I returned to work which coincides with 5th day of Chinese New Year and also Valentine's Day, my friend invited me to a Yee Sang & seafood dinner. And, this marks my 1st Yee Sang in 2013!

Many times, I heard  from friends raving about delicious gourmet served in Restoran Hokkaido, a halal seafood restaurant. That night, we thought of having dinner in Cheras but the terrible jam took over our route to Jalan Pekeliling with lesser traffic on the road.

I was given the honour to choose my favorite dishes from the given menu. And for sure, I can't resist  Yee Sang  which is a must to eat during this  festive mood together with other seafood.

I wanted to order a smaller portion but unfortunately only this big palate of yee sang was available.
With fresh cut salmon, a packet of pepper & 5 spice powder topped this colorful platter of Yee Sang (RM75) , we tossed and tossed higher for better luck. Appetizing and fulfilling indeed. Emptied before next dish arrives.

Steamed Escargots with Pounded Ginger and Garlic Sauce
I didn't know this kind of cooking style can churned out a robust taste, maintaining the soft & chewy escargot meat drown in flavorful gingery sauce.

Fried Butter Prawns
Combining Indian and Western ingredients, this is totally a knockout dish. Aromatic curry leaves, creamy milk and butter enhanced the taste of giant juicy prawns covered with crunch fried grated coconut.

Steamed Garoupa Fish with Assam Gravy
Another winning dish.  Caught from a live aquarium, the fish meat was fresh and firm came soaking  in a moderately spicy, rich sweetness balanced with a sour undertone gravy.

We cleaned our plates of rice and all the dishes feeling satiated.  Even better, we ended the night with jokes and laughter.

Oh yeah, I noticed that most tables ordered crabs. Another dish to try in my next visit. The owner and servers are friendly, so tell them your taste preference i.e spicy, mild & etc.

4TH & FINAL YEE SANG IN 2012

This is another CNY luncheon hosted by my ex boss. In total I have 4 yee sang this year...hope I'll be more 'ong'..hahaha!  A pre- arranged meal in Li Yen Restaurant @ The Ritz Carlton Hotel and and cost approximately RM1,800 per table.

It is not a CNY lunch without tossing Yee Sang rite? This tasted much better...moist and sweet compared with the one I had in Hakka Restaurant.  We added pamelos and turnip to make this a bountiful and yummy dish!

3 Hot Combinations
everything was simply irresistable fm the fried crispy silver fish, fried crab roe till the stir fried diced chicken

Braised Dried Scallops wih Four Treasures
no presence of egg (my boss dislike) and hence, it was diluted but acceptable

Stir Fried Scallops and Asparagus with XO sauce
Though I like the succulent fresh scallops and crunchy green, but I can't detect the XO taste.

Fried Rice with Assorted Seafood
anything with seafood...I'll take it
fragrant fried rice with dice juicy scallops and prawns

Fried Ma Yau Fish with Thai Sauce
A colleague brought the fish fresh from the catch...and it was certainly delish...fried to the crisps and  top with shredded mangoes + onions with aromatic thai sauce

Cream of Mango
creamy and heart warming

Crispy Chinese Pancakes with Lotus Paste

Red Velvet Cake
My ex boss wife ordered from her friend. This is my first eating this cake, it was quite dried but I like the cream cheese.

3RD YEE SANG IN 2012

On the 9th day of Chinese New Year, most of us had returned to work. One of our bosses treated us to  a 9 course lunch in Hakka Restaurant. The restaurant was packed with diners enjoying eating and chatting at the same time....still in the new year mood!
Tossing Yee Sang.......it was tad  too dried and not scrumptious
Combination of Roast Duck and Chicken....both were equally tender and skin crackling
Stir Fried Mixed Seafood and Greens.....place a tablespoon of this on a piece of lettuce...just like eating 'jiu hu char with salad leaf
Grilled Cod Fish....succulent and moist
Stir Fried Vegetables with Button Mushroom + Lotus Root...crunchy and tasty
Vegetables Soup
Fried Seafood Rice ....can't feel the wok hei, thus not fragrant at all though edible
Mixed Cut Fruits
Steamed Kuih Bakul with grated coconut

CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH GOLDEN FORTUNE PIZZA

For those who don't fancy to eat Yee/Loh Sang or chinese dinner during the auspicious day, why not treat yourself and your family on a luxurious pizza. Well, my sister who heart Pizza treated us to this galore recently.  It was a new promotion available in Pizza Hut.
She ordered a Set of Golden Fortune Pizza @ RM49.90 ++ for 4 pax. I was already salivating looking at the prawn tempura.

A jug of Revive
with 4 glasses filled with ice cubes

4 bowls of mushroom soup
just the way I like it...bites of mushroom in a decent tasty soup.
being a cheesy lover, my mom and sis sprinkled lots of  cheese powder into their bowl of soup while I preferred black pepper which gives better flavour.

Large size pizza topped with 8 Tempura King Prawns

look at this.....
not only the prawn tempura was succulent but there were loads of cheese+cut chicken ham+pineapple+ strips of crab meats, red capsicum+onion

BBQ Chicken Wing (RM9.90++)
our extra order really satiated us...
each pieces of 'chicken wing'  (without drumstick) still moist + juicy even after deep fried and coated with flavourful BBQ sauce

BEI ZHAN RESTAURANT

Upon entering this two storey white building, I was amazed with the colorful dragon decorations in every corner of this restaurant. This is a Dragon Year and the animal signifies wisdom and power.

Beautiful Red Dragons
'Lively' fishes

This is our first time having dinner here eventhough we passed by this eatery many many times. Since my sister and friend are not a fan of'yee sang', we opted for few dishes with a plate of fried noodles.
Bei Zhan Fried Royal Noodle (RM10++)
We were not awe at all with this plate of fried mi sua/longevity noodles. Lack in taste and noodles was soggy.
Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet (RM22++)
Each pieces of garoupa fillet was fresh + juicy while the sweet + sour gravy perfected this palate
Fried Black Pepper Ostrich (RM15++)
Very fragrant and peppery smell but unfortunately the meat was hard to chew
Grated Oat Crispy Fried Baby Crab (RM18++)
We didn't really enjoy this cos' there were more cereals than crab

Fried Prawns with Macadamia Nut (RM22++)
You get what you see...
Lightly stir fried crunchy prawns + capsicums and nuts

1 pot of Chinese Tea Pu Er (RM7.50++)

2nd YEE SANG in 2012

This is my second yee sang I had with a friend over dinner in a non halal chinese restaurant. It's difficult to describe how to go to this eatery due to its secluded location unless you navigate using a GPS. I don't own the gadget but chance upon this hidden gem while driving here and then in Cheras.

Bountiful of Yee Sang ...half portion @ RM28.80
instead of thinly sliced salmon, over here it was cut in bigger and thicker size and I luv it!

Hokkien Mee (RM5)
filled with fried pork lard, slices of pork meat + squid, this plate of noodles was full of wok hei and simply irresistible
Salt & Pepper Fried Frogs (RM26)
it is not chicken or prawns but frogs... and we made the right choice. Meat still tender and juicy....just eat it with or without the fried spicy topping.

MY 1st YEE SANG in 2012

With the Chinese New Year round the corner,  Yee Sang is always high in demand over lunch or dinner in  restaurant.  This special dish is usually indulge with a group of people in order to create happy and merry spirit.  What if there is only 2 or 3 person ? Well, you can still toss and eat Yee Sang but in a notch low spirit.  Having said this, my good friend and I went to Sushi Tei in Pavillion to try out their super good deal Yee Sang promotion.

This is our main reason coming here....
colorful Small Yee Sang (RM16.80++)
my plate of yee sang....
I heart for the fresh salmon and top seashell....which my friend dislike

Set of Chicken K Ramen (RM15.80++)
slurp! slurp! slurp! Q Q ramen in a light & tasty soup base

fried chicken fillet...moist and tender

Fried Soft shell crab sushi (RM6.80++)
fresh and crispy crab

With 2 glasses of refillable ice green tea @ RM2++ each, our bill came to RM50.35 which we find it reasonable especially with  the tantalizing set of fresh yee sang.
