CLAYPOT CHICKEN RICE @ HEUN KEE

My mom and I am are a fan of claypot chicken rice. We purposely make our way to Heun Kee after a day of window shopping.

This restaurant is situated near to Pudu market along Jalan Yew (under the highway). Amples of parking space under the overhead bridge is available in the evening.

At the entrance of the restaurant, you can see claypot rice stoves and charcoal are being used to cook this signature dish in order to churn out the aroma.

For both of us, we had a small size of claypot chicken rice (RM8) , a small bowl of pepper pork belly soup (RM8) and a glass of ice herbal tea (RM1).

The rice was well cooked together with marinated chicken, topped with slices of chinese sausages and a piece of steamed salted fish (in a small metal bowl). However, my mom commented that its not fragrant enough as we can't feel the presence of shredded ginger, garlic + sesame oil which I fully agreed.

Double thumbs up for the pepper pork belly soup! Tender and soft pork belly + chicken's leg + fragrant pepper!
Besides the staple which we had, you can opt for claypot waxed meats rice and other side dishes such as curry fish head, vinegar pig trotters, various types of soup and etc.

MUN WAH HOKKIEN MEE

I' ve passed by this shop many times but I couldn't bother about it till my friend and pulled me to join them for a dinner recently.

This shop which are located few doors away from Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka in Jalan Maharajalela, KL has been opened for many years and are famously well known for its Fried Hokkien Mee and also other signature dishes.

Not feeling too hungry, we ordered Hokkien Mee and two side dishes only.

Stir Fried Lettuce with Garlic
"Crunchy and tasty"

Fried Calamari/Squid
"Crispy and appetizing"

Fried Hokkien Mee
"springy noodles + fresh seafood = delicious"

After having this meal, I wanted to order other side dishes but my friend stopped me and promised another visit to this eatery. Guess, I'll wait for the next visit!

SEK YUEN RESTORAN - FOOD

It was a Friday evening with heavy rainpour and I was still stucked in the office. While 'cleaning up' my emails, thenomadgourmand came online and asked me to join for dinner in Sek Yuan Restoran in Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur. Not knowing where is the restaurant, I agreed and accepted the invitation. Immediately, I went into the internet and searched for the restaurant telephone number. An elderly man answered the phone and told me to take Star LRT and stop at Pudu station. I didn't know it was so easy to go there without going through all the traffic jam especially on Friday.

When I stopped at LRT Pudu Station, my eyes were looking high and low for the restaurant. As I walked, in less than 3 minutes, I was at the back of the restaurant. As I step in, Kevin (aka Cook/Chef - not by profession) greeted me and introduced himself. This is the first time I met him and he was also from Penang and not forgetting TNG who also hailed from Penang. OMG! What a small world!

While waiting for TNG and friends to arrive, I took photos of the restaurant and also in the kitchen with permission from the friendly uncles. These elderly uncles are the one who prepare and cook the authentic chinese food in the kitchen....

TNG arrived shortly then followed by Elyna whom I met up for the first time. But sadly two fo TNG's friend didn't turn up and we had to cancelled few dishes.

for decades, Sek Yuen has been the place for large gatherings such as weddings, birthdays and baby full-moon dinners.

our table of six???

a bowl of steamed rice....

Pat Poh Ngap (Eight Treasure Duck)-RM75 (pre booking is necessary)

the hidden treasures ...duck meat (tender and juicy), lotus seed, gingko, black mushroom and chinese herbs..overall, I find this dish nothing to 'shout about' and its pricey!

sharkfin and crabmeat omellete - RM30

a plate of green lettuce was given to eat with this dish.. its quite flavorful but not worth the money!

Mun Chee Sau (braised pork knuckles)-RM35
Thumbs Up! Aromatic and tasteful with lots of sea cucumber.

fried wrapped wine chicken....not in our menu

Since the dinner was not so appetizing and while we were planning to go for a dessert, a Swedish friend who is supposed to join us for dinner appeared in front of us. We took him to 'Wai Sek Kai' in Pudu for supper and dessert.

Thanks to TNG for organising such a wonderful dinner with lovely friends.
Looking forward to more of this eating out.

next....'in the kitchen'
