HAINANESE CHICKEN RICE IN MENTAKAB

An impulsive trip without proper food plan had landed us here in Mentakab. It was almost dinner and yet we did not know what or where to eat.  As usual, we drove aimlessly hoping to find good food and luck were with us after we parked our car and saw Restoran Sin Sek Kee across the road. Actually, it was the crowd at the nearby night market/pasar malam that attracted us the most.

Since I do not know this restaurant well and before writing this post, I googled and got this info from wikipedia
Hainanese chicken rice is also another type of popular food among Mentakab residents and local tourists alike. Restoran Sin Sek Kee, located near the junction between Jalan Mok Hee Kiang and Jalan Zabidin, is popular for their chicken rice and attracts a lot of customers during lunch and also dinner. This restaurant used to serve Water Convolvulus & Squid in sauce (鱿鱼蕹菜). Water Convolvulus & Squid in sauce was the restaurant's signature dish before venturing into Hainanese chicken rice.

This lady was super busy chopping chickens for her customers

We ordered 1 set of chicken rice to share. The chilly sauce is awesome..spicy + garlicky taste  complement well with the roast chicken breast. However,  I  find the chicken rice and soya sauce not fragrant at all without any hint of sesame oil / ginger / garlic.

Since we were not satiated with the plate of rice, we embarked on the pasar malam that first captured our attention. And yes, we enjoyed all our 'purchase' especially durians which was sold at RM10 for 6. But no photos was taken cos' we were darm busy eating...hahaha!

  1. Hi, how you doin'? The last time I was in Mentakab was wayyyy back in the early '80s. Used to eat kai fun there too, as well Teo Chew moi which I love very much.
Termeloh, Mentakab....Jerantut....these are places will always remain in my memories.

Love your this posting, and the kai fun looks real good too.
Great pics....ya, must have lots of garlic, and very important, the chilli sauce, its a make or break this one.
Incidentally, have you tried one of the very best kai fun> Singapore's Mandarin hotel Chatter box kai fun.
It is well known internationally too, loved even by foreign tourists.
I used to have it twice a week when there.
If you have not, try it.
    Have a nice day.
